Volunteer: Becoming A Hospice Companion Volunteer Could Change Your Life

Horizon Home Care & Hospice is looking for a few beautiful souls to volunteer at our Lawlis Family Hospice In-Patient Unit, located on the second floor of Columbia, St. Mary's Hospital in Mequon. If you enjoy meeting new people and are interested in providing a helping hand to our compassionate nursing staff, then this may be the perfect role for you!

As a Hospice Companion you will be well prepared to serve the needs of our patients and their families. There is extensive training, much of it centered around therapeutic communication with the dying and the grieving. We are certified by Joint Commission and report to the State Board. As required, you should plan on 10-15 hours of orientation, broken out over several sessions and a few days. We will also provide you with training on direct patient care, so you are able to assist our nurses and aides with some essential functions at our hospice in-patient unit. You truly are, and will feel like, a part of the care team at Horizon's Lawlis Family Hospice.

It should also be noted that our volunteer program is very flexible. Whether you are retired and have lots of extra time on your hands or you're extremely busy yet feel the need to give back to your community, we will make it work for you and your schedule.

Please feel free to reach out to us today, to apply or just to make an inquiry. We'd love to hear from you!

To start your service experience, please reach out to the Volunteer Department at 414-365-8300/Email: volunteers@horizonhch.org.

A Friendly Visitor Volunteer is someone who donates their time to provide companionship, social interaction, and emotional support to people who may be isolated, homebound, or simply in need of a friendly connection. It’s a warm, relationship‑based volunteer role focused on improving someone’s quality of life.

Here’s what a Friendly Visitor Volunteer typically does:

Provides companionship:
Spend time chatting, listening, and being present with someone who may not have regular visitors.

Engages in meaningful activities:
This could include playing cards, reading aloud, doing puzzles, watching a show together, or reminiscing about life.

Offers emotional support:
Volunteers build trusting relationships and provide comfort through conversation and consistent presence.

Helps reduce loneliness and isolation:
Regular visits help clients feel connected and valued, especially if they live alone or have limited social interaction.

May assist with light, non‑medical tasks:
Examples include helping write letters, organizing small items, walking together (if appropriate), or supporting a hobby.
(Friendly Visitors do not provide medical care or personal care.)

Friendly Visitors often become a bright spot in someone’s week. They help create a sense of community and belonging, and their visits can significantly improve emotional well‑being for older adults, individuals with disabilities, or others who benefit from social support
